June 25, 2020

With Governor Beshear’s announcement of the Kentucky Public Health and Kentucky Department of Education’s expectations for re-opening school for the 2020-21 school year, Nicholas County Schools wishes to share some of the steps that have been taken toward the purpose. While the following is not a complete resource list of our re-opening plan, it does give you a snapshot of what school will look like for the coming year. Throughout this summer, as we receive additional guidance on requirements needed to begin school and stay open, our plan will continue to evolve. Before July 15th, the final Nicholas County Re-Opening Plan can be found at our website, https://www.nicholas.kyschools.us/  Until then, we thank our parents and community for their patience as we develop a plan that best meets the needs of Nicholas County students within state guidelines.

When will school start?

Students will begin school on August 12th

What will the school schedule be?

It is the goal for our district for students to be in session as many days as possible for next school year. However, should that not be manageable due to state mandates, a hybrid schedule is being developed as an option.

What is a hybrid schedule?

Our goal is to reduce class size to a point that students will not have to wear mask in classrooms and to have students in as many days a week as possible. To do this, the district is considering all options, including a hybrid schedule which is a split of in-person classes as well as virtual learning from home.

What will be the safety expectations for my child?

  • Daily temperature checks upon entering the building
  • Reduced class sizes with students being socially distanced  (6 feet apart)
  • Practice social distancing
  • Masks will be required when students move
  • Masks will be required on school buses

Is there an option to sending my child back to in-person classes?

A Virtual Academy will be available as an option for students that cannot attend school in person. Registration will be July 15th for the Virtual Academy (more information will follow).

What will virtual learning look like for next school year?

Chromebooks have been purchased for all students in grades 3-12. These will be used for distance learning. Edgenuity Learning Management System will be used for blended learning at school and virtual learning at home.  If there is no internet access at home, lessons can be downloaded or printed while the students are school.
