Back to the Future … Classroom

Superintendent Doug Bechanan reluctantly announces a change of status for Mrs. Barbara Allison, current Nicholas County Middle and High School Principal.   Mrs. Allison will be leaving the principal’s office and heading back to the classroom next year, working with and for a new principal at NCMHS.  “Mrs. Allison has been such an asset to NCMHS, first as a teacher, then as assistant principal and then as principal.  I first knew her as a high school science teacher when I was principal at Nicholas County High.  I have witnessed her professional growth as she has faithfully served in 2 administrative positions in that same school.  Barbara Allison has invested her life in the students and staff at NCMHS and she leaves the school in great shape for whoever follows her as principal.”

Mrs. Allison’s roots go deep into Nicholas County Schools as the valedictorian of the class of  1982.  Her husband, Todd, and children, Laci (Dunn) and Austin are also graduates of NCHS.  She started teaching science courses at her alma mater in 1999 on an emergency teaching certificate, went to college full-time the following year to complete her certification program, and from 2000-2009 taught Biology, Chemistry and Integrated Science as well as serving as sponsor of the National Honor Society, Pep Club, KYA, KUNA and Senior Class trips.  In 2009, Mrs. Allison became the assistant principal and then in 2014 she became the principal of NCMHS.  When asked why she wanted to transition back into teaching, Mrs. Allison replied, “I’m not ready to retire but I’m ready to slow down.  I want to be able to spend more time with my grandchildren and the rest of my family.  I might even read a book or two.”  She also stated that as an administrator , you are limited as to the relationships you can build with students and she’s excited about being able to once again be able to build more relationships with her students.  “I really enjoy teaching.  I know what I have learned in the past 10 years as an administrator will enable me to be a better classroom teacher.”  She also expressed her gratitude to her teachers and staff as well as to Mr. Bechanan for the support she has received as an administrator at Nicholas County Middle and High School.

Nicholas County Schools thanks Mrs. Barbara Allison for the last decade as an administrator at NCMHS and welcomes her back to a classroom in the fall of 2019.
